Overview

Tanzania Family Safaris Designed Around Your Family

Your safari can be as adventurous, comfortable, relaxed or wildlife-focused as your family wants it to be.

A family safari in Tanzania should be exciting for the children and enjoyable for the parents. That is why we don't believe in simply taking a standard safari itinerary and adding children to it.

At Emnel Adventures, we design private Tanzania family safaris around your family's ages, interests, travel dates, preferred comfort level and pace. Your safari can combine the wildlife-rich landscapes of Tarangire and the Serengeti with the Ngorongoro Crater, cultural experiences and relaxing time on Zanzibar.

With a private safari vehicle and dedicated guide, your family has the freedom to travel at a pace that makes sense for you. If the children are fascinated by elephants, we can spend more time watching them. If everyone needs a slower afternoon, we can build in time at the lodge or camp. The aim is not to fit your family into a fixed schedule, but to create a safari around your family.

Tanzania is particularly rewarding for families because one journey can offer very different experiences: elephants beneath the baobabs of Tarangire, wildlife across the Serengeti plains, the remarkable concentration of animals in the Ngorongoro Crater and the beaches of Zanzibar.

Whether you are planning a first safari with young children, an adventure with teenagers or a multigenerational family holiday, we can tailor the route, accommodation and daily rhythm to suit the people travelling with you.

Your Own Safari Vehicle & Guide

Travel privately with your family and a dedicated safari guide who gets to know what everyone wants to see, from elephants and big cats to birds, landscapes and local culture.

We consider children's ages, room arrangements, child policies, location and facilities when selecting lodges and camps, helping you stay somewhere that works for the whole family.

05

A family safari isn't about filling every hour. We balance game drives with swimming, downtime, cultural experiences and time to enjoy your lodge or camp.

06

Safari & Zanzibar Together

Finish your wildlife adventure with time on Zanzibar's beaches. We can combine safari, domestic flights and a family-friendly Zanzibar stay into one seamless journey.

Is a Tanzania Safari Good for Children?

Yes, and Tanzania is one of Africa's best destinations for a first family safari. The northern parks are close together, wildlife is plentiful and easy to see from the vehicle, and many lodges and camps welcome children with family rooms, pools and children's programmes.

Under 6
Very possible, with care. We keep driving days short, choose lodges with family rooms and pools, and plan around naps and meals. Some tented camps set minimum ages, so we match the accommodation to your children.
Ages 6–11
Often the sweet spot. Children are old enough for longer drives and curious enough to make every sighting an event. Guides involve them with spotting, animal tracks and a little Swahili.
Teenagers
Older children can take on more: photography, longer Serengeti days, cultural visits and, at selected camps, guided walks (walking activities usually carry a minimum age, often around 12 or older).
Health and safety
Your guide is with your family throughout, and vehicles carry first-aid kits. We'll share malaria and vaccination guidance before you travel, and we recommend a visit to a travel clinic

What Does a Family Safari Day Actually Look Like?

Parents often ask us what an ordinary day will feel like with children. No two days are identical, but a typical day looks like this:

  1. 6:30 am

    Morning game drive

A light breakfast or snack, then out with your guide while animals are most active and the air is cool.

  2. 9:30 am

    Follow the wildlife

Your guide follows what the children are excited about rather than racing through a checklist. A breakfast picnic in the bush is often the highlight of the day.

  3. 12:00 pm

    Back to camp

Lunch, a swim, a rest or simply time together during the hottest hours.

  4. 3:30 pm

    Afternoon drive

A shorter drive, adjusted to your family's energy, as the light turns golden.

  5. 6:00 pm

    Sundowners and dinner

Back before dark to wind down around the fire.

Some days look different. In the Serengeti, a full day out can be worth it when the wildlife is exceptional. On travel days we keep the driving reasonable and break up long stretches with stops. Because the safari is private, the timetable is yours.

The Best Time for a Tanzania Family Safari

June–October

The dry season, with excellent game viewing and the Migration in the northern Serengeti from about July. It coincides with summer school holidays, so book well ahead.

December–February

The calving season in the southern Serengeti, with warm days. It's ideal over Christmas and New Year.

November and March

Quieter, greener and often better value, with short rains that rarely spoil a day.

April–May

The long rains. Some camps close, so we generally don't recommend these months for families.

Ask a question
Is Tanzania safe for children?

Tanzania can be an excellent family safari destination when the itinerary, accommodation and activities are selected appropriately for the children's ages. During game drives, families remain in the safari vehicle and follow the guidance of their professional guide and the rules of each protected area.

What is the best age for a Tanzania family safari?

There is no single best age. Younger children can enjoy wildlife and shorter activities, while older children and teenagers can engage more deeply with wildlife, photography, conservation and cultural experiences. We design the itinerary around the ages of your children.

Can young children go on safari in Tanzania?

Yes, although age policies vary between lodges, camps and activities. We take children's ages into account when selecting accommodation and planning the daily pace.

How much does a Tanzania family safari cost?

Private Tanzania family safaris with Emnel Adventures start from around US$350 per person sharing per day for our Essential level, with Mid-Luxury from around US$450 and Luxury from around US$550. The final price depends on accommodation, season, itinerary, children's ages, number of travelers and included services.

Which Tanzania safari parks are best for families?

Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti are among the most popular choices for a classic northern Tanzania family safari. The best combination depends on your travel dates, children's ages, safari duration and interests.

Is Serengeti good for children?

Yes. The Serengeti offers an exceptional wildlife experience for families, particularly when the itinerary allows enough time to avoid rushing between parks. We can adjust the daily rhythm around your family.

Is Ngorongoro Crater suitable for families?

Yes. The crater offers concentrated wildlife viewing within a spectacular landscape and is commonly combined with Tarangire and Serengeti on northern Tanzania family safaris.

Is Tarangire good for a family safari?

Tarangire is an excellent option for families, particularly for its elephants, baobab landscapes and varied wildlife. Its location also makes it a practical part of many northern Tanzania safari routes.

How long should a family safari in Tanzania be?

Seven days is a useful starting point for a classic northern Tanzania safari, while families with more time can benefit from nine to twelve days. Shorter safaris are possible, and longer journeys can include Zanzibar or additional parks.

How long are safari drives in Tanzania?

Driving times vary considerably depending on the parks and route. We consider road distances when planning family itineraries and can use domestic flights where they make sense for your family and budget.

Will my children get bored on safari?

A well-designed family safari should include more than long game drives. We balance wildlife viewing with suitable activities, cultural experiences, swimming, downtime and accommodation where children can relax.

Can we have a private safari vehicle?

Yes. Emnel Adventures specializes in private safari journeys, allowing your family to travel together with a dedicated vehicle and guide.

Can we combine a Tanzania safari with Zanzibar?

Absolutely. Safari and Zanzibar is one of the most popular combinations for families. We can arrange the safari, domestic flights and Zanzibar extension as one journey.

What is the best time for a Tanzania family safari?

Tanzania can be visited throughout the year. June to October is a popular period for classic safari conditions, while January and February can be excellent for the wildebeest calving season. Your children's school holidays and preferred travel experience are also important considerations.

Can children see the Great Migration?

Yes. Families can experience the Great Migration, but the location of the herds changes throughout the year. We plan around the seasonal movement and your travel dates rather than promising one fixed migration location.

Are family rooms available in Tanzania safari lodges?

Many lodges and camps offer family rooms, interconnecting rooms or other family configurations, but policies vary by property and age. We check the specific accommodation requirements when designing your itinerary.

Can we book a Tanzania safari from Zanzibar?

Yes. Families staying in Zanzibar can combine their beach holiday with a private Tanzania safari, with domestic flights connecting Zanzibar with safari destinations such as Arusha.

What should children bring on safari?

Comfortable lightweight clothing, sun protection, closed shoes, a hat, personal medication, binoculars if available and a small day bag are useful. We provide more detailed packing guidance based on your itinerary and travel season.

What about malaria on a Tanzania family safari?

Malaria precautions depend on your family's individual circumstances and travel route. We recommend discussing malaria prevention and any medications with your doctor or a qualified travel-health professional before travelling.

Do safari lodges allow children?

Policies vary by property and age. Some lodges and camps welcome children of all ages, while others have minimum-age requirements or restrictions on certain activities. We select accommodation based on your children's ages.

Can we include cultural experiences?

Yes. Depending on your route, cultural experiences can include visits involving local communities and traditional ways of life. We select experiences according to your family's interests and itinerary.

Is a private safari better for families?

A private safari offers greater flexibility because your family is not sharing the vehicle with other travelers. This allows the itinerary and daily rhythm to be adapted more easily around your children's interests and energy levels.

Can we change our itinerary after receiving the proposal?

Yes. Your first proposal is the starting point. We can adjust accommodation, route, duration, activities and comfort level until the itinerary matches what your family wants.

How far in advance should we book a family safari?

We recommend planning early for peak travel periods, particularly school holidays and the main July to October safari season. Earlier planning gives you a wider choice of family-friendly accommodation and room configurations.

Can you arrange flights and airport transfers?

Yes. Where required, we can incorporate domestic flights, airport transfers and other logistics into your safari proposal.

Do you offer luxury family safaris?

Yes. Our family safaris can be designed at different comfort levels, including luxury accommodation and premium safari experiences.

Can you design a safari for grandparents and children travelling together?

Yes. Multigenerational safaris can be designed with a balance of wildlife, comfort, manageable travel times and activities suitable for different generations.
