Commonly cited at approximately 137 km², though the figure grows considerably if Mount Meru's slopes, added in 1967, are counted in full — sources vary on this point.

Is Pemba a good first Zanzibar trip?

Generally not — it's a quieter, more specialist destination best suited to guests who've already experienced Unguja and want something different, particularly serious divers.

Is Ruaha Tanzania's largest national park?

It was, until 2019, when the renaming and consolidation of Nyerere National Park made that park considerably larger. Ruaha is today Tanzania's second-largest national park.

Is Zanzibar part of a safari itinerary?

Not in the wildlife sense — it's almost always the closing, beach-focused stop after a mainland safari, run by a separate coastal specialist team.

Is Nyerere the same place as the Selous Game Reserve?

Not exactly anymore. In 2019, the northern, western and southern sectors of the former Selous Game Reserve — nearly all the land tourism uses, and every lodge in this guide — were renamed Nyerere National Park. A smaller eastern sector still carries the Selous name under separate management.

Emnel Adventures was founded in Arusha in 2016. The name carries weight: Emily, Nelson's youngest sister, and Nelson himself - family at the heart of everything this company is.

Nelson started Emnel with a belief that there was a better way to show Tanzania than through a reseller or fixed-package operator. He wanted guests to experience the country the way he knows it - from the inside, with someone who grew up in its shadow, reads its seasons, and understands that a great safari is built on specific knowledge, not generic itineraries.
